Efficient Light Control using Motion+Opening Sensors?

Messagepar Horia » 04 Mars 2016 00:30

Hi All,

I apologise for not sending this in french, I am lacking for the subject's complexity.

I am struggling to find a comprehensive programming logic for controlling lights in bathrooms (and alike spaces) while using opening+motion sensors, facing an incoherent family behaviour in respect to using the access doors, and targeting and optimal+efficient use of lights.

Turning on the lights, is easy, based on the motion detection, regardless of the door status. My target with adding the opening sensor was in two respects:
- Avoid turning off the lights while presence and no motion (ex. somebody taking a relaxing bath). Better I don't share the complaints I got.
- Avoid keeping the lights on more than required, while using the "n'a pas change depuis" operator in the rule or an increased motion timer on the Fiabaro's sensors. I had to be generous in this respect, like 10 mins or more in some of the rooms.

Obviously, with a coherent use of the doors, I could just put in place a rule that turns off lights only when door opens and motion is present in the room.

Meanwhile, as I said, my family's approach on using these spaces, is rather incoherent, hence many times, entering and not closing the doors (like to just wash hands), other times, exiting and not closing doors. The later, I would like to catch as well in the programming, to trigger notification reminders, while we heat this spaces for comfort, hence another optimisation desire.

My current programming, has three rules:
1. To turn on lights, based on motion detection
2. To turn off lights based on timed lack of motion ( the n'a pas change depuis 10min)
3. Timed detection of the open door, to trigger TTS notification asking the family to close the door

Personally, I am not seeing a solution, with two logically disjoint conditions for the above situation. A real presence sensor is what is required but I haven't seen one.

Meanwhile, if you have suggestions on how to optimise my current rules, I appreciate your inputs. I'll share my updates if I'll progress.

Thanks and regards, Horia

The solution depends on the equipment that you use for the detection.
In your cas, you need presence sensor and I think that some motion sensor can be calibrated as presence sensor because the technologie is normally the same. But for that, you need to test several parameters.

What is your motion sensor?

I use Fibaro FGMS-001 motion sensors. I thought increasing the motion cancelation delay parameter to emulate the presence detection, meanwhile this is equivalent with using two conditions in eedomus like "est aucune mouvement" and "n'a pas change depuis 5 min"...hence simpler than to configure 20 of these sensors.

Meanwhile, this approach is inefficient, light stays on more than required in many cases, and still exceptional turn off happens, if the motion is in the room lacks for more the time defined in the n'a pas change depuis.

I am facing this challenge pretty much in all bedrooms (for ex. when somebody reads) and bathrooms (for ex. relaxing bath). The only place I mediated was in the living room, where I added a noise detection condition while eedomus is there. But even there undesired turn offs happen, for example I watch a movie, pause to do something on my phone...hence the noise condition and motion conditions all become true...
